Life in the NCA

Protecting the public from serious and organised crime is one of the most important challenges facing the UK. At the National Crime Agency, it’s our mission—and our people make it possible.

Every day, more than 5,000 NCA officers use their expertise to disrupt the criminal networks that cause the greatest harm to the UK. From modern slavery to cybercrime, illicit finance to kidnap and extortion, our work spans the UK and reaches across the world. When you join the NCA, you become part of a community united by purpose, driven by curiosity, and committed to protecting the public.

A mission with real impact

Serious and organised crime is constantly evolving—and so are we. The NCA blends advanced intelligence-gathering techniques, cutting‑edge technology and specialist operational capabilities to target criminals upstream, overseas and online. We work with partners across UK policing, government, regulators, international law enforcement and agencies such as INTERPOL and EUROPOL, as well as the private and charitable sectors to lead the UK’s operational response.

Whether analysing data to find hidden patterns, building intelligence on global criminal networks, supporting victims, or coordinating an operational response from halfway across the world, our officers know their work makes a tangible difference.

A place for every skillset

Joining the NCA doesn’t mean one type of career. Our roles are as varied as the threats we tackle.

Specialist investigators and operational experts

Officers working on threats such as human trafficking, kidnap and extortion, cyber crime, fraud, organized immigration crime, and serious crime analysis use world‑leading techniques to identify offenders, protect victims, and dismantle dangerous criminal gangs. They apply deep investigative skills, sound judgement, and empathy—often in fast‑moving or highly sensitive situations.

Digital, Data & Technology

From data scientists solving complex analytical puzzles to cyber engineers tracking criminals online, our technical teams are transforming the way UK law enforcement operates. They design new tools, decode huge datasets, and ensure our people have the best technology to stay ahead of offenders.

Financial intelligence and illicit finance specialists

We host the UK Financial Intelligence Unit (UKFIU), National Economic Crime Centre (NECC), and the Proceeds of Crime Centre (PoCC), where officers help law enforcement across the UK use financial intelligence, recover criminal assets, and disrupt illicit finance at its source. Their work protects vulnerable people, strengthens the UK’s financial system, and ensures criminals cannot profit from harm.

Legal, policy and corporate professionals

Our lawyers advise on everything from operations to cybercrime, international data transfers to high‑value litigation. Corporate teams in HR, commercial, strategy, business support, analysis, and programme delivery keep the Agency running smoothly and help shape the future of UK crime‑fighting. No day is ever the same—and their work directly supports frontline operations.

What our people value

Across all these roles, NCA officers consistently tell us the same things:

  • Every day matters. Whether analysing evidence or training partners across the world, they see real outcomes that protect the public.
  • There’s always something new to learn. Crime evolves—and so does the NCA. Officers move between teams, develop specialist expertise, and build unique careers.
  • Collaboration is key. Officers work closely with brilliant, dedicated colleagues across the Agency and beyond.
  • Work that fits with life. Many officers value the flexibility and work‑life balance that enables them to succeed both professionally and personally.

Work that spans the world

With headquarters in London, major hubs in Bristol, Birmingham and Warrington, and regional offices across the UK, our presence is national—but our reach is global. Officers are based in over 40 countries, working alongside international partners to stop crime before it reaches UK borders.

From airport runways to data centres, courtrooms to classrooms, and operational hubs at home and abroad—your work can take you anywhere.
